GR86 - Engine performance optimization

Access to GR86 is the result of testing multiple configurations and more than 125 measurements on the dynamometer to achieve optimized design. We tested both the cars in the standard version and after modifications to assess the impact of the change of the inlet on improving engine performance using a less restrictive solution. The NA 2.4L Boxer engine is sensitive to intake air temperatures, so our initial priority was to provide a fully sealed system. Tests on the dynamometer revealed a drop in power around 6000 rpm in the standard ECU. This power decrease persists independently of the intake configuration – even after removing all possible restrictions, the higher air flow results in a strong engine resonance at this turn, resulting in a temporary power drop below the standard curve. The standard airbox has a damping effect at this range of rotations, but at the same time reduces power in higher lots. By testing different lengths of inlet, single and double holes and the addition of separators, we managed to create a version that minimizes the resonance decline, while increasing power by 14 hp in higher turns on the standard ECU. After tuning the ECU, we achieve high power gains in the average range of turnover and elimination of the power drop below the standard curve.

The Eventuri system to GR86 uses a patented carbon fiber casing that provides aerodynamically effective airflow path from filter to engine. It is not only a simple conical filter with a thermal cover, but a unique design that induces the Venturi effect and keeps the conditions of laminar flow, reducing resistance on the engine.
